what we believe

Pittwater Anglican Church is a bible-believing, Christ-exalting, reformed-evangelical church and part of the Sydney Anglican diocese.

1. About God

There is one eternal God, who exists in the everlasting relationship of Father, Son and Spirit – one God in three persons. God is sovereign in all things and worthy of all glory, honour and praise.

2. About humanity

Men and women are made in the image of God and have dominion over the created order. Tragically, humanity is universally sinful since the Fall and guilty in the sight of God. Alone, we are unable to turn ourselves back to God.

 3. About the Bible 

The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to us. It is divinely inspired and is authoritative in all matters of faith, salvation and living. Scripture is sufficient for knowing God.

4. About Jesus

Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin, Mary - he is both fully God and truly human. He endured temptation, suffering and death, but was perfectly obedient to God, his heavenly father. On the third day, he rose from the dead and he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.

5. About salvation

There is only one name under heaven by which people can be saved - Jesus. Through his sacrificial death as our substitute, the guilt, penalty and power of sin can be removed. The Holy Spirit enables people to repent and put their faith in Jesus, so that salvation is entirely of God’s grace, not human works.

6. About the church

The church is the gathering of believers around Christ in his word. Believers are a body who work together, seeking to use their individual spiritual gifts to build the church.

These simple summary points seek to show that our standard of faith is the historical Christian gospel, made clear in the Bible. This has in the past been usefully set out in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds, and in the 39 Articles of Christian Religion . These benchmarks are to be understood within the framework of their own particular historical contexts and use of language and are always subject to the clear meaning and intent of the Bible.

When talking about such important issues as the content of our beliefs, sometimes we need more details than creedal statements can give. We have found that the best way to bring about this clarity, whenever possible, is talk in person.
